Letter: Praise for The Mother Load/The Mother Load Name withheld by request I appreciate so very much these two articles. Both touch a place in my heart which I have never been able to articulate. My life as a mother was not anything I ever expected or imagined due to the depression my daughter suffered from, beginning as a small child. As we learned, it was genetic. When you hear the statement "suffers with depression", believe it. Those with depression and/or mental illness, truly suffer! As a mother of a chid with depression and co-existing mental illness, little did I know how my life would be impacted as it has, and the lives of our entire family. All things a mother does felt unrelenting and magnified. To this day as our daughter is now middle aged, it continues in so many ways despite efforts and years of learning to find ways transfer the burden off us. The natural burdens of a mother as described in "The Mother Load", don't just stop as the phone calls still come in. Even though a mother may not act on remedying the needs for her family, they are occupying her mind. And, in our case where we have had to raise a grandchild due the situation, it continues to impact future generations, and the "mother load" still grows. I also sadly comprehend Donna Rieder's decision not to have children. My grandchild already states that idea in her future for the same reasons. Being a mother is not for the faint in heart.
