Tamara Coots helps keep LWC students healthy, educated Tamara Coots' title at Lindsey Wilson College is director of health services, but she could also be called "student health adviser." Coots oversees the college's student health services center in the basement of Phillips Hall, where she and the college's seven athletic trainers meet students' wide range of health and medical needs. Coots, who is also a clinical instructor in Lindsey Wilson's top-ranked nursing program, stays plenty busy during the semester. For example, last fall, she saw about 350 students, which averaged about 30 visits a week. Through a special arrangement with Cumberland Family Medical, Lindsey Wilson's health services center offers students and employees many of the benefits of visiting a doctor, thanks to a telehealth service called Tyto Care. Coots uses a digital tablet and special medical instruments to examine patients, which can be seen by another healthcare provider at an off-campus medical office. TytoCare allows an off-site healthcare provider to listen to a patient's heart and lungs through a special stethoscope, as well as to see into the patient's eyes, ears and throats. "It's a very cool technology because it allows the healthcare provider to get a physical assessment via telehealth," said Coots. "Essentially, it's like having a doctor's office on campus. I think it gives parents peace of mind, knowing that there is something right here on campus that their student can have access to when they don't feel well." Coots can test patients for common viruses such as strep throat, the flu and covid, and she can draw blood for laboratory work. She can also administer allergy shots, give students over-the-counter medications or recommend that they see an off-campus healthcare provider. "If I can't help a student or employee who comes to the health services center, I will definitely find somebody who can help them," she said. Coots said that a big part of her job is also instructing students in how to live a healthy life, as well as how to navigate the healthcare system. "I enjoy educating the students on how to take care of themselves, along with educating them about wellness, preventative health measures and other health issues," she said. "A lot of our students are away from home for the first time. Back home, they've probably had someone else take care of these things for them. So I enjoy being the person who can help them." And as an Adair County native who is a 2009 graduate of Adair County High School and a 2013 graduate of Lindsey Wilson's nursing program, Coots said it is special to serve her alma mater. "It's like full circle to be a student here, graduate from here, and now come back and give back to Lindsey Wilson by working with students, both as a campus nurse and as a clinical instructor in the nursing program," she said.
