Carol Perkins: Remembering Phil Donahue Previous Column: Who Knew? By Carol Perkins I was a fan of Phil Donahue. I taped every show and watched them late at night after everyone had gone to bed. His guests were not only celebrities but also controversial guests, such as KKK members and a group of White Supremacists. I think even Phil was nervous. Back in the 1970s, when Guy had gone to work for a company in the Chicago area, we were invited to a dinner/meeting with company management. Guy knew some of the men, but I knew no one. When I learned we were going to be in the Chicago area, I wrote for tickets to the Donahue Show. I remember where I was when I opened the envelope, and four tickets fell out. You would have thought I'd hit the lottery. Four tickets? I was confident that two others would want to go with us. Keep in mind, I knew no one there. As I mingled with the ladies the night of the dinner, I found my ticket holders. "Yes, I'd love to go," they both said, as excited as I was. They had moved from other states to the area, so they were almost as new as I was. Guy was the driver. Chicago is not a city to go "looking" for an address, but that's what we did. He weaved in and out of traffic, wishing he were somewhere else. At the studio entrance, the line was long. We waited. We were ushered to a large room and singled out as to where we were to sit. Guy was on one side of studio, the two ladies down front, and I was in a seat in the middle. Who was the guest? Bette Midler! I was so glad it wasn't some female stripper turned preacher. The show ended with three of us in awe, and Guy was ready to leave. My impression of Phil Donahue was of a funny and very professional man. When I learned he had passed away, I reflected on that day years ago when the four of us worked our way through Chicago and into his studio. We ladies became good friends. One has since passed, but the other, Shirley, is still close. I actually took her to a Headhunters Concert in Vegas! You can contact Carol at carolperkins06@gmail.com.
