Jody and Neva Richards recognized for WKU alumni achievement

Former KY Speaker of the House and Adair County native Jody Richards and his wife Neva Richards will be recognized for alumni achievement at the Hilltopper Excellence Awards, which will start at 5:30pmCT on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Knicely Conference Center, 2355 Nashville Rd, Bowling Green, KY.

Jody Richards received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1960 and a Master of Arts in Journalism from the University of Missouri in 1962. In 1963, Jody began as a faculty member at WKU and served as an adviser to the College Heights Herald and Talisman.

He first ran for office in 1975, and he won the 20th District seat in the Kentucky House of Representatives. While still in his first term, Jody was called to chair the House Education Committee, and he later played an integral role in engineering sweeping education reforms. In 1995, Jody was elected Speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives--a role where he could continue to champion economic development and education.

Jody, whose 14-year tenure as Speaker of the House was the longest in state history, was instrumental in securing state funding for WKU to construct Mass Media and Technology Hall and at least seven other buildings during his 42 years in office.

He was influential in securing funding for The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky. In 2009, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service from WKU, and the WKU Board of Regents renamed Mass Media and Technology Hall as Jody Richards Hall in 2017.

In 1980, he began Superior Books, which he operated until 2010. He also served with the U.S. Army Reserve and the Kentucky National Guard from 1962 to 1968.

Neva completed courses at WKU while caring for family and pursuing her career. She retired from Bowling Green Municipal Utilities after 28 years of service. She is an active member of Greenwood Park Church of Christ and involved with many civic organizations. She was President of both the Bowling Green Women's Club and the Warren County Democratic Woman's Club. She was also involved with the Boys Club Board, the Med Center Health Foundation Community Relations Committee and the Business & Professional Women's Club.

Jody and Neva have been loyal supporters of the University for more than 40 years, have served on numerous University boards and committees, and are members of the WKU Alumni Association. They have been married for nearly 50 years.

Registration to the Hilltopper Excellence Awards is open at alumni.wku.edu/HEA24 at a cost of $100 per ticket or $1,000 for a corporate table for eight. Business attire is requested.
