Ty Coleman pledges to become an Eagle Scout From presentation by Troop 185 Scoutmaster Mark Coleman Monday evening, family, friends and Scout Troop members gathered at Columbia United Methodist Church to honor Ty Coleman for his hard work to reach the goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. Ty started his journey in elementary school. He learned about Scouts from his brother and made the decision to join. On his Cub Scouts journey, there were lots of fun activities including visits to the firehouse, Hanging out with his brother and mentor, Gabe, Pinewood derbies, caving, camping - in temperatures in the low 20s and when it was in the 90s. In those years, he has held various leadership positions in Troop 185 including chaplain aide and senior patrol leader. He was elected as senior patrol leader after being in the Troop for only a year. As a Boy Scout, Ty has learned what it means to be a good citizen, and earned awards such as the Cyber Chip, Firemen Chit, Totin Chip, Recruiter, and World Conservation. Service is a big part of Scouting. It started in Cub Scouts and continued all the way through Ty's Eagle project. There were shifts ringing the bell each year for the Salvation Army, trash pick-up days that were combined with camping, leading to more than 120 hours. Coleman made the following comments in the Eagle charge, "As he pledges himself on his sacred honor, Ty Coleman will be sealing his loyalty to the code of the Eagle Scout with the words which closed the Declaration of Independence -- more intense obligation to your church, your community, and your troop. The knowledge you have gained in all areas of Scouting will better enable you to be prepared for the future and its challenges. The Scout Motto "Be Prepared" now takes on special meaning. America has many good things to give you and your children after you; but these good things depend for the most part on the quality of her citizens. Our country has had a great past. You can help make the future even greater. I charge you to undertake your citizenship with a solemn dedication. Be a leader, but lead only toward the best. Lift up every task you do and every office you hold to the highest level of service to God and to your fellow man. So live and serve, that those who know you will be inspired to finer living. I charge you to be among those who dedicate their hearts, hands, skills and abilities to the common good. Help to build America's future by continuing to set an example of clean living, honest work, unselfish citizenship and reverence for God, regardless of what others may do. You will leave behind you a record of which you may be justly proud. Eagle Candidate Ty Coleman, I charge you to enter this Eagle Scout brotherhood without reservation and hold always before you the ideals of honor and service. By repeating the Eagle Scout Promise before your fellow scouts, you will become an Eagle Scout. When you pledge yourself on your sacred honor, you will be sealing your eternal loyalty to the code of the Eagle Scout." This story was posted on 2024-05-15 16:54:19
