Hungry children get help from Backpack Program

From Heather Dudley, ACPC Family Resource Center

1 in 5 children in Kentucky may go to bed hungry tonight - The Adair County Backpack Program allows each of us to help.

Adair County Schools through the Feed America Program want to partner with you to help make sure none of these statistics are Adair County students!

Approximately 71 Adair County students are receiving additional food for the weekend during the current 2023-2024 School Year through the Backpack Program. Food, which is distributed discretely each Friday and sent home in the students' backpack by Family Resource/Youth Service,Center personnel and Head Start personnel, goes to students who are referred for the program by either parents or faculty/staff members. Parents must give written permission for participation in the program after the referral is made.

Backpacks include enough food to make a few healthy meals. That way, kids return to school on Monday, ready to learn.

Backpacks may include:

- Breakfast items like cereal, oatmeal, or granola bars

- Easy to prepare meals like mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or canned soup

- Bread

- Milk or juice

- Fresh or canned fruit

- Fresh or canned vegetables

- Snacks

How can you, your business, club, organization, or church help?

Log onto to www.feedingamericaky.org and click on Donate and choose your donation amount. Click on Feeding Kids: Backpack and Food Pantry Programs. Scroll to the bottom and type in Adair County Backpack Program as the designation for your donation. This ensures your donation stays 100% local!

Thank you for helping in the fight against hunger!
