Mike Mills, 75, Green County, KY (1948-2024)

James Michael "Mike" Mills, age 75, of Greensburg, son of the late Ralph Baker Mills and Alice Rachel Rogers Mills, was born in the Exie Community of Green County on Monday, June 14, 1948, and departed this life on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at his Greensburg home.

He served in the Navy for four years, spending one year (1968) in country in the Vietnam War, arriving in Saigon for the Tet Offensive. He was a member of the American Legion Rod Lowe Post #124. He completed his degree in education from Western Kentucky University with a Rank I. He was a retired teacher, assistant principal, and principal for the Green County School System.


He was awarded admittance to the Kentucky Association for Academics Competition Hall of Fame in 1999. After retirement, he became the first Greenburg Director of Community Development. Mike returned to education as a Site Coordinator for GearUp Kentucky from 2005-2011.

Mike served on the South-Central Kentucky AHEC Board, Green County Ambulance Service Board of Directors, and LG&E/KU Consumer Advisory Board. He was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Mike provided audio visual support for many school and community activities, such as Junior Miss, Green County Fair, the Arts Council events, Historical Society plays, downtown parades, and music performances, National Day of Prayer, library programs, Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Christmas Cantata and years of school events.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Terry Lynn Durham Mills of Greensburg, having united in marriage on October 29, 1970.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law; Matt and Amanda Mills; two grandchildren: Kimber Thompson and husband, Jordan, and Ella Mills; a great-grandchild; Silas Thompson; mother-in-law: Ina Dee Durham; a brother and sister-in-law: Larry and Nancy Mills, all of Greensburg, and his sister Patsy Morrison of Florida; a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Ann H. Durham and Ralph Cook of Greensburg and Mark Durham of Lexington; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law H.H. Durham and nephew Eric Bradley.

Honoring his wishes, cremation was chosen. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2 P.M., Central Time, Saturday, March 2, 2024 at the Greensburg Presbyterian Church with Full Military Honors by the Marion County Honor Guard at the Greensburg Cemetery following the service. Rev. Matthew Wilson officiating.

Visitation is requested after 12 Noon, Central Time, until time of the memorial service at the Greensburg Presbyterian Church. Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The family has requested that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Forever Green River, Greensburg Presbyterian Church, or the Hosparus of Green River which can be made at the church or the funeral home.
