Adamson to march in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

By Amber Hobaugh
Editor, Adair Progress

Adair County High School Junior percussionist Grant Adamson is living in the "opportunity of a lifetime" this week as he will participate in the 97th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as part of the Macy's Great American Marching Band (MCAMB).

The MGAMB is composed of some of America's finest high school musicians, color guard members and dancers from across the United States.

The band is under the direction of Dr. Richard Good, Auburn University, Dr. Doug Rosener, Auburn University, Percussion Director, Mr. Bart Woodley of WGI, Flag Instructor, and Ms. Kailene Laga, Dance Instructor. This staff is also assisted by several talented music educators from across the country who serve as section instructors for the winds and percussion and assist in teaching the music, Herald Square drill and parade formation. The 185 musicians will be complemented by approximately 40 flags and dancers.

The group's featured song this year will be "Cheeseburger in Paradise" and they will also play "Sweet Caroline" as they travel along the parade route.

Grant and his family left for New York City last weekend in order to prepare for Thursday's event.

"We flew up last Friday and then went Saturday morning for his check-in and uniform fitting," Grant's mom Ashley said. "Since then, we haven't got to see him much as they've been preparing and practicing all week for the big day."

She went on to say that although it will be a long week, with practice beginning at 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, she could not be more proud of her son for this accomplishment.

"He loves it so far and he's having fun," she said. "I just told him to soak it all in, to live in each moment and relish this once in a lifetime opportunity he's been given."

The parade will air live on NBC from 8:30 a.m.-Noon on November 23, 2023 or can be streamed using the Peacock app. Also, be watching The Adair Progress Facebook page for a more specific time to catch Grant with the Macy's Great American Marching Band just in case you are not available to sit and watch the whole parade.

Grant and his parents are extremely thankful for the community's support in helping him reach this endeavor, "It takes a village and we are so grateful for ours!" Ashley said. "The community has really rallied behind our family to make this happen and we are so appreciative!"
