Chad Parnell begins July 1, 2021 as new ACHS principal

By Linda Waggener

As the new fiscal year starts Thursday, July 1, 2021, Chad Parnell begins his journey as principal of Adair County High School. A look at his bio, below, shows how the Adair County native has moved up the ladder from Adair County schools student, to graduate, teacher, innovator, assistant Principal and now to ACHS Principal.

He feels good about the positive culture that has been building over the past years under Principal Troy Young who retired this summer and Parnell aims to keep the momentum going.

"We have exceptional faculty and staff," he says. He believes all 96 of them are ready to see their 750 students face-to-face as school begins in August and help them through the challenges of being back in "regular" classes for the first time since March of 2020.

The school has added SEL time (social emotional learning time) this year to help students as they return to in-class attendance after the long hard months of the COVID-19 pandemic and all the required changes. They will make sure the academic side of school balances with social and emotional.

"Students will have time to just sit and talk, among other social activities," he said, "Youth Services Center Coordinator Hali Anderson has many social activities planned."

Even in summer school sessions going on now, morale is good. He sees students smiling again as they come back with no masks and with no barriers. He said they are happy to be back.

Parnell has a goal to increase community involvement. "We are judged by the state on how well students are doing in career readiness," he said. The aim is to help students launch (transition) successfully from school on their way to becoming productive members of society.

Basic life skills, including ethics, workplace skills and personal money management skills, are included in the curriculum of every student.

Each freshman is required to choose from 20 different career pathways offered at ACHS. The principal says students aren't locked in to the chosen path, it can be changed. However, he said it is a start for them. Specializing is shown to be very helpful as students explore what a career might look like in their chosen path.
