LWC Men's Soccer faces top seed William Carey

The No. 3-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team continues their NAIA tournament run this evening when they face host and No. 1-seed William Carey (MS) in the opening round final of the Hattiesburg Bracket. Kickoff is set for 5pmCT. The winner of today's match will move on to the final site of the tournament in Columbia County, Georgia.

The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team (10-3-2, 8-1-2 MSC) advanced to the final after defeating No. 2 seed WVU Tech 2-0 Thursday afternoon.


Ezequiel Hernandez and Julien Gastaldy scored a goal each in the match while Neville Morgan tied his career-high in assists for the Blue Raiders in the opening round victory. The victory improved the Blue Raiders all-time participation record in the NAIA National Tournament to 55-16-6.

For the Blue Raiders this season, senior midfielder Cyrus Harmon serves as the anchor for the team's offense, leading the team with 12 goals, 29 points, 48 total shots, and 23 shots on goal. Harmon currently averages 0.80 goals per match, which ranks fourth in the Mid-South Conference. Senior defender Neville Morgan has recorded a team-high seven assists this season, averaging 0.47 per game, the fifth-best in the MSC. On defense, senior goalkeeper David Coffey leads the team with 31 saves on the season, has recorded five shutouts, and currently has a goal against average of 1.11, the fourth-best in the conference. As a team the Blue Raiders have outscored their opponents 39-16 this season, averaging 2.60 goals per game and 1.87 assists per game, the third-best in each category in the Mid-South Conference.

The No. 1-seeded William Carey men's soccer team (11-1-1, 5-1 SSAC) advanced to the final after defeating No. 4-seed Missouri Baptist 4-0 Thursday evening. Senior forward Pablo Varela Vasquez Fraga led the offensive charge for the Crusaders in the game, scoring a hat-trick with four shots on goal to win over the Spartans.

For the Crusaders this season, the team's offense is led by senior Pablo Varela Vasquez Fraga who has 13 goals, three assists, 29 points, 36 shots, 25 shots on goal, and four made penalties. Fraga currently averages one goal per game, the second-best in the SSAC. Assist-wise, Juan Ruiz Cabello leads the team with eight this season and averages 0.62 per game, the third-best in the SSAC. On defense, senior goalkeeper Buenyamin Yusufoglu leads the team with 45 saves on the season, has recorded six shutouts, and currently has a goal against average of 0.67, the 12th best in the country. As a team, the Crusaders have outscored their opponents 38-7 this season, averaging 2.92 goals per game, the second-highest in the SSAC and 2.31 assists per game, the best in their conference. The Crusaders defense also boasts a goals allowed per game rate of 0.54, giving them the sixth-best defense in the NAIA.

The Blue Raiders hold a 7-2-1 all-time lead against the Crusaders, winning the last match played in 2015, 3-2 in overtime.
