Fast Start Leads LWC Baseball to 13-12 Win

By Brady Budke

Midway, KY - One of the best starts to a game this season for the Lindsey Wilson baseball team was just good enough for a victory, as the team corralled a close 13-12 win on the road over Midway (KY) on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Raiders to 20-20 overall on the season while the Eagles drop to 10-23.

Through just the first three innings on offense, LWC produced 11 runs on 12 hits to take commanding control of the game. However, Midway fought back and stayed close in the contest but came up just one run shy of a massive comeback.

The Blue Raiders rolled out 15 hits on offense, led by Kelvin Llanos who matched his season-high of three. Ty Menrath, Derek Zavala, Tyler Maskill, Nico Martinez, and Lucas Bault all recorded a consistent mark of two hits apiece. Bault tallied his LWC career-high of five RBIs in the game, while Zavala was close behind with three RBIs of his own.

Brandon Wilson picked up the start and earned the win from the mound, going 2-2/3 innings pitched allowing seven hits and six earned runs while walking and striking out two. Ryan Marples was the first pitcher out of the bullpen, pitching 1-2/3 of an inning where he allowed three earned runs alongside one hit and four walks. Bailey Turner replaced Marples where he went 3-2/3 innings pitched allowing five hits, one earned run, and one walk while striking out a game-high four batters. Henry Paulino finished the game off in the ninth and earned the save.

The Blue Raiders got on the board as early as the second pitch of the game. On a 1-0 count, the game's leadoff hitter Menrath connected on a solo home run over the left field wall to jump LWC out in front by a run. This was the fourth home run of the season for Menrath.

Lindsey Wilson continued to bring the pain early, crossing five runs in the second to extend its lead. Maskill, who was the second batter of the inning, sparked the scoring run after his double down the left field line eventually allowed him to steal home two batters later. Bault joined in on the scoring by crushing a three-run home run over the left field wall, which was his third home run of the season. Zavala capped the scoring off with an RBI double to deep left-center field that brought Menrath around.

The runs continued to pour in for the Blue Raiders, who added five more in the third. Bault started the scoring outburst by continuing his big day from the plate with an RBI single to score two runs. LWC went on to claim a lone run when the Eagles walked Austin Rayno with the bases loaded. Zavala brought around the final two runs of the inning with an RBI single to give Lindsey Wilson an 11-0 edge.

Despite the huge deficit at hand, Midway successfully put itself on the scoreboard and right back in the game with seven runs in the bottom half of the third.

Both teams went quiet for an inning before the Blue Raiders added a lone run to the scoreboard in the fifth. Paulino produced that run after he launched out a solo home run over the center field wall, his 14th of the year. This gave LWC a 12-7 advantage.

Midway added two runs of its own in the bottom half of the fifth. After this, two scoreless innings passed for both teams before Lindsey Wilson notched another run. Jaden Cockerel corralled an RBI off a single to shallow left field, allowing the Blue Raiders to now hold a four run advantage.

However, the Eagles answered the call with two runners crossing home in the bottom half of the eighth, trimming the LWC lead to just two with an inning to go. Midway was able to add a lone run in the ninth, but it wasn't good enough to tie the game.

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team will conclude the regular season on Monday, April 26, at Egnew Park against No. 20 IU Southeast (Ind.). First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. CT.
