LWC Softball Drops Two to Bethel By Kyrin Mayfield McKenzie, TN - For the first time this season, the No. 2 Lindsey Wilson softball team was swept in a doubleheader, as the Blue Raiders dropped both contests against Bethel (TN) on Saturday. Lindsey Wilson (35-5, 27-5 Mid-South Conference) was unable to score a run on the day and only recorded six hits, while the Wildcats (22-12, 16-12 MSC) pushed 10 runners across the plate on 14 hits. Game 1 (five innings): Lindsey Wilson - 0 | Bethel - 9 After limiting Bethel to a combined one run and six hits yesterday, Lindsey Wilson had a difficult time taming the Wildcats' powerful offense in the first game. Following a quiet opening inning, the Blue Raiders were in good position to start the scoring. Mikayla Marquez laid down a well-placed bunt for a two-out single. Lyric Houston also got on with a base hit past the shortstop to put a pair of Lindsey Wilson batters on base. Elizabeth Funk loaded the bases after an error by Bethel, but the Blue Raiders could not capitalize on the opportunity. Instead, the Wildcats got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. Maddie Cochran got things going with a leadoff single. Leah Hayes then recorded a base knock of her own to bring Cochran home for the initial run. One inning later, Bethel exploded for five runs. All nine Wildcats stepped to the plate and produced five hits, four of which were singles. Bethel took a commanding 6-0 lead. In the fourth, the Wildcats once again batted around the order. Another five-hit inning propelled Bethel up 9-0. The Blue Raiders were unable to close the gap in the fifth, which led to a run-rule win by the Wildcats after five innings. Five different players for Lindsey Wilson notched a hit in the game including Marquez, Houston, Funk, Alexis Garayzar, and Lexi Isable. Breanna Clark (6-2) received the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout over three innings pitched. Game 2: Lindsey Wilson - 0 | Bethel - 1 Annabelle Ramirez quieted the Bethel bats in the second game. She notched six strikeouts over the first three innings and did not allow a Wildcat to reach base. Unfortunately, the Blue Raiders had a difficult time making contact as well. After two walks in the first frame, Lindsey Wilson went 1-2-3 in each of the next three innings. The Blue Raiders did have an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the fifth after a walk and an error had both Marquez and Brianna Griffiths in scoring position with one out. However, a strikeout and a pop out kept a goose egg on the scoreboard. Lindsey Wilson's only hit came an inning later on a leadoff single by Garayzar, but she was left stranded on base too. Finally, the scoreless tie was broken in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Gillespie led off the inning for Bethel with a double to deep center. A wild throw by Lindsey Wilson's third baseman on a ground ball from Macey Cox allowed Gillespie to score the only run of the game for either team. Two fly outs and a strikeout concluded the seventh inning and gave the Wildcats the sweep. The Blue Raiders managed just one hit in the contest, which is a season low for the squad. Ramirez (23-3) was handed the loss despite not giving up any earned runs and allowing only two hits with nine strikeouts. Lindsey Wilson has five days to rest before heading to Lawrenceville, Ga., to face No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett in the regular-season finale on April 23 at 12:30 p.m. CT.
