LWC Softball sweeps doubleheader on Friday

By Kyrin Mayfield

McKenzie, TN - It was another dominating performance by the No. 2-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball pitching staff, as the Blue Raiders limited Bethel (TN) to one run and six hits combined in a doubleheader sweep on Friday in McKenzie, TN.

With the pair of wins, Lindsey Wilson (35-3, 27-3 Mid-South Conference) has locked in at least a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title. One victory on Saturday would give the Blue Raiders the regular season crown and the top seed in the conference tournament.

Game 1: Lindsey Wilson - 2 | Bethel - 0
Annabelle Ramirez continued her impressive season on Friday with a start in the circle for the first game of the doubleheader. In her opening inning of work, Ramirez stuck out the side. Over the first three frames, she kept the Wildcats (20-12, 14-12 MSC) hitless and sent seven batters down on strikes.

Lindsey Wilson got on the board first with a solo home run by Lyric Houston to start the third inning. An insurance run was added in the following frame when Lexi Isable knocked a leadoff home run herself for a 2-0 lead

A two-run advantage was more than enough of a cushion for the Blue Raiders, as Ramirez allowed just three baserunners and struck out nine batters over the final four innings.

Ramirez (23-2) received the win from her eighth shutout of the season. She allowed just three hits and tied her career-high in strikeouts with 16. Ramirez's 23rd win puts her in sole possession of the sixth-most wins in a single season in program history. The right-handed pitcher also climbed from fifth to fourth on the program's top-10 list of most strikeouts in a season with 240. Lastly, the shutout sends Ramirez into a three-way tie for sixth-most in a season.

Houston led the offense with a line of 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Also of note, Brianna Griffiths recorded one walk in the contest to give her 27 on the season and move her into a four-way tie for the fourth-most walks in a single season in program history.

Game 2: Lindsey Wilson - 3 | Bethel - 1
Hannah Epperson picked up right where Ramirez left off, as she held Bethel to one hit throughout the first five innings. However, Lindsey Wilson couldn't get anything going at the plate either with only one base knock and three baserunners in the same period of time.

Then in the sixth inning, the Blue Raiders took advantage of a miscue by the Wildcats. Sam Sims reached base to begin the frame when Bethel's third baseman made a wild throw after fielding Sims' bunt. Two batters later, Makea-Al Kaluau hit her NAIA-leading 15th ball over the fence to put Lindsey Wilson in front.

The Blue Raider bats continued to produce in the seventh when Houston lifted ball out of the park to increase the lead to 3-0. This marked the fourth game in a row that Lindsey Wilson hit multiple home runs.

A scare occurred in the bottom of the seventh when the Wildcats' Kayla Gillespie hit a one-out double. An ensuing error by Griffiths on a ground ball had runners on the corners. Jade Brallier then sent a pitch to deep center for a sacrifice fly and Bethel's first run of the series. With the tying run at the plate, Epperson got Bailey Bandy to pop out and end the contest.

Epperson (6-0) threw seven innings and allowed just one run on three hits with six strikeouts for her sixth win of the 2021 campaign.

Kaluau went 1-for-3 at the dish with a run and a pair of RBIs. Her home run moved her into a four-way tie for the sixth most in a single season in the history of the program.

Mikayla Marquez earned a stolen base in game two. Her 22 swiped bags bump her from a tie for ninth to a tie for the eight most in a single season in program history.

Both teams return to the field Saturday in the final two games of the series. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
