LWC Volleyball claims 6th straight MSC Tournament title

By Kyrin Mayfield

Bowling Green, KY - For the sixth year in a row, the title of Mid-South Conference Tournament champion belongs to the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team. The No. 1-seed Blue Raiders put on a show at Bowling Green High Arena on Saturday by taking five sets to defeat No. 3-seed Georgetown (Ky.). Lindsey Wilson has won every MSC Tournament since 2015.

At the beginning of the first set, Georgetown (15-6, 11-5 MSC) put together a 5-1 run fueled by two kills from Hunter Keller. That cushion allowed the Tigers to stay ahead for the entire first half of the set, but the Blue Raiders were eventually able to reel Georgetown back in. The two teams evened the score at 13-13 and later 21-21, but the Tigers recorded four of the final five points to take set one 25-22.

Lindsey Wilson (21-3, 14-2 MSC) kept in close contact with Georgetown to start the second set. Both squads split the first ten points before the Blue Raiders went on a 4-0 run to go up 9-5. Lindsey Wilson held onto the lead from that point on, going up by as many as nine points to win 25-16.

Set three was won in similar dominating fashion by the Blue Raiders, as Lindsey Wilson never allowed the Tigers to take the lead in the set. Ahead 9-8, the Blue Raiders outscored Georgetown 13-5 for a 22-13 advantage. Soon after, Lindsey Wilson claimed the third set 25-16.

The fourth set was closely contested for the opening half, as the Blue Raiders were barely behind 15-14. The Tigers used three kills and an ace to carve out some breathing room with a 19-14 lead.

Lindsey Wilson followed with its own 4-0 run to get back within a single point. A few minutes later, the Blue Raiders tied the score at 22-22 after a Georgetown attack error. However, the Tigers claimed the final three points to force a decisive fifth set.

Neither team was willing to give an inch in the final set. Tied at 4-4, four errors by Georgetown helped vault Lindsey Wilson up 9-4. A few points later, the Blue Raiders were ahead 11-6 when the Tigers got back into the set with four points in a row.

With Lindsey Wilson up 13-12, kills by Madison Bidwell and Sandra Szczepanska sealed the set, the match, and the championship for the Blue Raiders.

Szczepanska led the team in kills for the first time this year with a season-high 15. Bidwell notched 13 while Alexis Smith earned 12.

Camryn Rich tallied 46 assists and a team-best 22 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. She was one of four Blue Raiders to receive 10 or more digs in the match alongside Lauren Larzelere (15), Abby Grubbs (12), and Peyton Johnston (11).

Radaisy Valdez was the squad's top blocker with eight in the contest.

Lindsey Wilson now begins its preparation for the NAIA Tournament. The opening round is scheduled for April 17, while pool play begins on April 27 in Sioux City, Iowa.
