LWC Volleyball faces Georgetown in MSC Tournament Championship

By Kyrin Mayfield

The winner of the Mid-South Conference Tournament will be decided on Saturday as the No. 1-seed Lindsey Wilson volleyball team goes head-to-head with No. 3-seed Georgetown (KY) for the title. First serve is scheduled for 12:30pmCT at Bowling Green High Arena.

The Blue Raiders are aiming for their sixth tournament championship in a row, while the Tigers last won the title in 2014, which was the most recent year a school other than Lindsey Wilson was crowned champion. Combined, the two programs have claimed 23 of the 24 MSC tournaments. Shawnee State won back in 2010.

Georgetown handed the Blue Raiders their most recent loss in a five-set affair on April 1 at the Biggers Sports Center. Lindsey Wilson is 20-29 all-time against the Tigers, but the Blue Raiders have won seven of the previous nine.

Lindsey Wilson (20-3, 14-2 MSC) used their MSC-best hit percentage (.236) and kills per set (12.9) to sweep No. 8-seed Bethel (Tenn.) in the quarterfinals on Thursday and No. 4-seed Campbellsville (Ky.) in the semifinals on Friday.

The Blue Raiders have tallied a hit percentage above their season average in each of their first two MSC Tournament contests. In Lindsey Wilson's quarterfinal win over Bethel (Tenn.) on Thursday, the team hit .329, the third-highest in a single match this season.

Radaisy Valdez and Alix Stoermer notched double-digit kills in the semifinals match against Campbellsville with 12 and 10, respectively. However, it was Alexis Smith who led the team with 14. She has eclipsed 10 or more kills in 16 of the 21 games played this year and leads the team with 3.5 per set.

Valdez also recorded four blocks against Campbellsville and has earned four or more in each of the previous five matches. She averages an MSC-best 1.1 per set.

On the back row, Lauren Larzelere digs out 5.1 spikes per set, fifth-most in the conference, and has tallied 88 across the last four games combined.

The Blue Raiders showed strong defensive play the last time against the Tigers with a season-high 109 digs alongside 12.5 blocks, the second-most in a game this year.

Georgetown (15-5, 11-5 MSC) sent No. 6-seed Shawnee State (Ohio) home in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Thursday but needed the full five to upset No. 2-seed Life (Ga.) in the semifinals on Friday.

Peyton Randolph and Hunter Keller pace the squad with 2.7 kills per set each. Keller lit up the court against the Running Eagles on Friday with a season-best 21 kills. Additionally, she leads the conference in hit percentage with a line of .388.

However, the Tigers rely on stout play defensively with the second-highest digs (20.3) and blocks (2.2) per set in the MSC.

Kamryn Webb garners the second-most rejections in the conference by averaging one in each set, while Samantha Lincoln patrols the back row earning an average of six digs in every set, second-best in the MSC.

Live video and live stats will be available. Tickets can be purchased on the Mid-South Conference website.
