A tick discovered and dispatched

By Linda Waggener

I spent a rainy, stormy Saturday morning going to the urgent care in new Columbia because I'd discovered a tick on the outside edge of my inner ear.

Normally I'd have struck a match, blown out the flame, touched the hot tip to the tick, then removed it with tweezers - however the location made it impossible to see well enough to take care of it without help.

In this time of pandemic the process is you go into the foyer for triage and sign in, give your cell number and then they will call you while you wait in your car until it’s your turn to come in.

Texting while waiting, three friends told me about others who'd also found ticks on them already this week. They must be out in force with the growth of new grasses. I remembered then that while my granddaughter had rolled in the new soft, spring grass in the yard, I'd slipped out of my shoes and gone barefoot for a few minutes. That could have been the invitation to the tick.

Lisa Todd, APRN, provided an individual tick kit, complete with tweezers, tick info and comparison chart, magnifying glass and baggies to take away the offending tick in case it's needed for evidence later.
