LWC Wrestling sends 9 to NAIA National Championships

By Christopher Coombs

Nine members of the Lindsey Wilson wrestling team are gearing up for the 2021 NAIA Wrestling National Championships this Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kansas.

Sam Bacon, Trent Johnson, Derrick Smallwood, Joe Koontz, Tyler Hall, Trajan Hurd, Carlos Figueroa, Trevor Lawson and Brandon Reed all earned automatic bids based on their performances at the Mid-South Conference Championships last week.

Wrestling on both days is divided into two sessions. Session I begins on Friday at 9amCT with Session II following at 5:30pmCT. Session III begins on Saturday at 10amCT. The first three rounds will be streamed on track wrestling.

Session IV - the championship finals - begins later in the day on Saturday at 7pmCT and will be streamed live on ESPN 3.

The top-eight finishers in each weight class receive All-American honors. The Blue Raiders have produced 45 All-Americans since the 2010-11 season, including four - Johnson, Smallwood, Lawson and Reed - last season.

Reed has claimed the last two heavyweight NAIA National Championships and looks to claim his third straight during his senior campaign. A Lindsey Wilson grappler has won an individual title nine times in the program's history.

Johnson, Smallwood, Hall, Lawson and Reed all claimed individual conference championships on Feb. 20th as the Lindsey Wilson wrestling team finished in first place at the MSC Championship.

The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team posted a fifth-place finish at the 2020 NAIA Wrestling National Championships last season.

Live results and video are available across both days of grappling. The 2021 NAIA Wrestling National Championships begin tomorrow at 9amCT from Hartman Arena.
