LWC Baseball to host Asbury in season opener

By Kyrin Mayfield

For the first time since 2011, the Lindsey Wilson baseball team begins the season at home with a matchup against Asbury (KY) at Egnew Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pmCT, and live stats and live video will be available. Please view the Lindsey Wilson attendance protocols for more information.

The Blue Raiders are coming off a 2020 campaign in which the team posted a 10-12 record with a 2-1 mark in Mid-South Conference play before the remaining schedule was canceled due to COVID-19. Lindsey Wilson caught on fire at the end of the season as the Blue Raiders won six of the final eight games.

Lindsey Wilson will have a lot of new faces out in the field as only six of the 11 players to start 10 or more games return.

However, the team's three top batters are back in Tyler Maskill, Seth Price and Derek Zavala.

Maskill recorded the second-most runs (15), stolen bases (9) and second-highest batting average (.338) along with 10 RBIs. Price started every game for the Blue Raiders. He notched a team-high 10 doubles and 15 RBIs while also garnering a respectable 14 runs and a .307 average at the plate. Zavala was a pain for opposing pitchers with his team-leading .421 average, 16 runs and 21 swiped bags. The senior also accumulated 11 RBIs and seven doubles.

As for pitching, Lindsey Wilson brings back three of the six Blue Raiders to start a game last season as well as all four relievers who made four or more appearances. Josh Barnett returns from a 2020 performance that saw the sophomore record a 3.10 ERA through 20 innings pitched over two starts and seven appearances. Cade Duncan is also back for another season after performing well as the closer. He secured four victories for Lindsey Wilson and had a team-high 11 stints on the rubber.

Asbury comes in with a 3-0 record having won twice against Toccoa Falls (Ga.) and once against Trinity International (Ill.). The Eagles outscored opponents 40-8 this year, and are on a six game winning streak dating back to last season.

Trevor Campbell leads Asbury offensively going 6-of-9 at the plate with a team-high two doubles, two triples, and one home run. Walker Paris consistently comes in clutch for the Eagles as he has a .600 batting average with 7 RBIs, the most on the team.

While the entire Asbury pitching staff has performed well with a 0.86 ERA, Tyler Morrison stands out after his impressive shutout against Trinity International last Saturday.

The Blue Raiders are 9-1 against the Eagles since 2000 and outscored Asbury 108-15 in those 10 meetings. However, the Eagles claimed a 7-3 victory in the last game back on February 22, 2019.
