Tax response from Adair County citizens: don't do it The Adair County Fiscal Court's second meeting of the first month of 2021 was moved from the Courthouse Annex to the gym at Blair Park in anticipation of a large crowd responding to the mention of a possible tax increase. However, the crowd of interested citizens didn’t total as many as might be found shopping early Sunday morning at Walmart. Fifteen people attended in addition to members of the Court, plus there were around 150 people active on the court's Facebook site. There were judgments, debates and questions during the two-hour meeting and the bottom line from the citizens who attended and watched online seemed to be - get your money somewhere else, not from an Adair County tax increase. Adair Judge Executive Gale Cowan had researched and made comparison information available to all Magistrates and to the public showing that Adair is the last county of all six surrounding counties to add either a payroll tax or an insurance tax to help fund operations. Complete information is offered to all who wish to pick it up for study. Paul Turner was the first of a few speakers, advising the court to cut back, lay off and cut payroll before putting a tax on an already stressed population hurting because of the pandemic. The full meeting is available for the public to watch on the Adair County Fiscal Court's Facebook Page. Those present in the house included: Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan; County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin; Treasurer Melinda Quinn; Fiscal Court Clerk and Solid Waste Coordinator Bridget Compton; Sheriff Josh Brockman; Jailer Joey White; Sixth District Constable Jason Rector; Emergency Management Director Mike Keltner; citizens Patrick Willis, Anthony Brockman, Tiffany Kessler, Leslie and Bruce Hadley, owners of a boutique; Paul Turner, owner of properties, and his son Tim; six of seven Magistrates (Chris Reeder was absent); a few more citizens and members of the media.
