LWC Men's Basketball struggles in loss to Shawnee State By Kyrin Mayfield Portsmouth, OH - The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team was unable to cool down a hot Shawnee State (OH) squad as the Blue Raiders fell to the Bears 90-70 at Waller Gymnasium. No. 7 Shawnee State (15-2, 11-1 Mid-South Conference) started strong with a 7-0 run a few minutes into the game. Josh Smith got Lindsey Wilson (4-10, 2-9 MSC) back into the game as the junior forward began the contest 4-for-5 from the floor with two 3-pointers. The Blue Raiders came within four points, but that's as close as Lindsey Wilson would get. The Bears would lead by as many as 13 points and closed the half with a 46-34 lead. Shawnee State dominated the glass in the opening 20 minutes, outrebounding the Blue Raiders 28 to 16. The Lindsey Wilson defense did force the Bears into 10 first-half turnovers. In the second half, it was all Shawnee State. The Bears continued to pound the paint, control the boards, and make shots at will. Shawnee State's lead grew to as much as 28 points (88-60) late in the game. The Blue Raiders made free throws down the stretch to reduce the deficit to 20 points. A quartet of Blue Raiders reached double figures. Ryan Friday led the way with 14 points. Smith and Travez Nyx followed with 12 points each, a season-high total for the latter. Payton Cundiff garnered a respectable 10 points. EJ Onu and James Jones paced the Bears, registering 23 and 22 points. Both players also recorded a double-double as Onu grabbed 12 rebounds and Jones notched 10 assists. Next up for Lindsey Wilson is a road rematch with Thomas More (KY) on Saturday, January 23, at 3pmCT. The Blue Raiders lost 67-51 to the Saints back on January 11.
