LWC Baseball: Three named to 2021 MSC Preseason Watch List By Kyrin Mayfield Nico Martinez, Tyler Maskill and Derek Zavala were named to the inaugural 2021 Mid-South Conference Baseball Preseason Watch List, officials at the conference office announced on Tuesday. The list showcases some of the top talent in the MSC for this coming season. Coaches were allowed to submit up to three student-athletes from their team to be mentioned on the list for the upcoming season. A total of 33 student-athletes from 11 programs were mentioned on the list. In an abbreviated 2020 season, Maskill and Zavala led a charge by the Blue Raiders at the beginning of March as the Blue Raiders won six of their final eight games before the season was canceled due to COVID-19. This year the two upperclassmen, along with newcomer Martinez, look to guide Lindsey Wilson back to postseason play. Maskill played and started in 21 of the Blue Raiders' 22 games. The senior infielder recorded 15 runs, second-most on the team, four doubles, 10 RBIs and nine stolen bases. He also hit for a solid .338, second-best on the squad. Zavala was Lindsey Wilson's most dangerous batter in 2020. He posted a .421 batting average and 21 stolen bases, leading the MSC in both categories. On top of that, Zavala scored 16 runs, most on the team. Additionally, the outfielder racked up seven doubles and 11 RBIs while maintaining a perfect fielding percentage from the outfield. Martinez joins the Blue Raiders from Miami Dade College (Fla.) where the catcher notched 18 runs, 21 RBIs, eight doubles and a team-high five home runs. The Blue Raiders kick off their season on Tuesday, Feb. 9, when they host Asbury University (Ky.) at 4:00 p.m. CT. This story was posted on 2021-01-19 14:46:29
