LWC Men's Basketball hangs on against Cumberlands By Kyrin Mayfield In a game that came down to the final seconds, the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team used strong free-throw shooting during the final minute to beat Cumberlands (KY) 73-69 at the Biggers Sports Center. The victory ended a seven-game losing streak and a four-game skid against the Patriots. Up next for the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team is a trip to No. 7 Shawnee State (OH) at 7pmCT on Thursday, January 21, 2021. The Bears beat the Blue Raiders 67-47 earlier this season on December 5, 2020. After being tied 37 all at halftime with Cumberlands, Lindsey Wilson took a slim 44-43 lead thanks to a Josh Smith 3-pointer. From there, Cumberlands built a 50-44 lead with a 7-0 run. Once again, the Blue Raiders fought back. Juwan Burnett made back-to-back 3-point shots and Ryan Friday followed with a bucket of his own. Lindsey Wilson led 55-54. A few minutes later, Smith found himself wide-open behind the arc and nailed the basket. The Blue Raiders possessed a 60-56 lead with over six minutes left. Lindsey Wilson was able to maintain a lead over the next few minutes. With under one minute left in regulation, the Blue Raiders were up 70-65. Cumberlands raced down the court and converted a layup, cutting the lead down to 70-67. Friday was fouled once again and knocked the two free throws in, giving the Blue Raiders a 72-67 lead with under 10 seconds left. Two more charity-stripe shots were hit by the Patriots, bringing the score to 72-69 in favor of Lindsey Wilson. After another intentional foul, Jordan iced the game by making one shot at the line. Cumberlands (12-5, 6-5 Mid-South Conference) came out firing in the first half. The Patriots shot an impressive 57.7 percent from the floor. Despite the efficiency, Lindsey Wilson (4-9, 2-8 MSC) was able to stay close. Down by eight points with just over six minutes left in the first half, the Blue Raiders slowly ate away at the deficit. From that point on, Lindsey Wilson went 6-for-11 on the court. Payton Cundiff nailed the final shot of the half by sinking a buzzer-beating 3-point shot to tie the game at 37. Elijah Jordan led the Blue Raiders with 12 points. Tevin Olison, the MSC's leading scorer, led Cumberland with 29 points and was 10-of-16 on the night. Jordan was the top performer for Lindsey Wilson with 18 points. Burnett and Friday also recorded solid outings with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Colen Gaynor notched 10 rebounds and seven points.
