Timely Lab Project: Why you should wash your hands

Toward the end of flu season I saw where a teacher had students touch bread with different scenarios to show them the importance of washing hands. So we tried it in our class at Adair County Middle School.

In the attached photos, you can see what we did and the results: no hand washing, hand washing, after hand sanitizer, and also chrome books, calculators, etc.

I came to school today and this is what I saw. It's kind of timely given the Coronavirus and washing hands. I have included the control bread, which no one touched. It has no mold.

Control bread, which no one touched, has no mold after a couple of weeks. Even with handwashing, some of the other experiments show considerable growth, even with hand sanitizer.

The results of an experiment in hand washing. Door knobs, phones, and at top right, unwashed hands, all caused considerable growth after just a couple of weeks. At bottom right and left, bread after careful hand washing shows considerably less activity.
