Melvin Bailey, 97, Columbia, KY (1921-2019)

Mr. Bailey was retired from the U. S. Army serving in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. He was also retired from International Harvester and was a member of the VFW post 6097.

Melvin Bailey of Columbia died Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at his residence. He was 97 years old.

A military graveside service will be held at 10:30amCT on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the Haven Hill Cemetery, Hwy 206, Columbia, KY, with full Military Honors provided by VFW Post 6097.

Visitation will be on Friday from 3pmCT until 8pmCT at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, and continue Saturday morning until 10amCT.


Born on June 6, 1921, in Casey County, KY he was the son of the late James Alford and Mary Burton Bailey and husband of the late Edith Burton Bailey.

Mr. Bailey was retired from the U. S. Army serving in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. He was also retired from International Harvester and was a member of the VFW post 6097.

Survivors include six children Harold Bailey (Bertha) of Edinburgh, IN, Donna Simmons (Joseph) of Jeffersonville, IN, Carolyn Burton of Columbia, James L. Bailey (Lisa) of Columbia, Ruth Shaw (Danny) of Edmonton, KY and Lisa Bailey of Scottsburg, IN; a brother B. J. Bailey of Westport, IN; a sister Alice Leona Burton of Sarasota, FL; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 6 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a son Roger Bailey, two grandsons Harold and Jamie Bailey, two brothers Hershel and Arthur Bailey and four sisters Cleda Bridenstin, Marie Toler, Eva Callam and Bertha Barker.

Pallbearers will be Jaylyn Bailey, Jamian Bailey, Derrick Redman, Juan Hughes, Bobby Johnson and Thomas Wade.
