Building relationships that last a lifetime

By Sabine Eastham, Director of the International Student Programs at LWC,
and Gintare Mackeviciute, Jonava/Lithuania, former student at LWC

When Gintare came to the U.S. and LWC in August 2016, she was paired with a host family: Bonnie, Lane, Sara and Jonathan Barnes, from Russell Springs, KY. The International Student Programs (ISP) matches international students with area families who are willing to host the students during the school year. Quickly, they became a huge part of Gintare' s life and support system in the U.S.

In the summer of 2018, Gintare made the decision to transfer to the University of Tennessee to continue her education. However, as it is with most host families and members of the LWC community, they are still staying in touch with "their" students, as they are building relationships that last a lifetime!

I came across the picture below on one of the Social Media sites and immediately asked "G" as she goes by to write an article we could submit to Columbia magazine.
This is officially the BEST host family you can ever get. Came all the way from KY to support me in one of our home games in UT Martin. These people were my first and only host family, and from the very beginning, they took a special place in my heart. By doing small things, like coming to every single home game while I was still in Lindsey, they were and still are the biggest supporters I have here, in US. Things like spending my first thanksgiving or always celebrating my birthday with them was special. I feel soo lucky to have them in my life. No matter what you need, they were always there, ready to help and do the best they can. Thank you Bonnie, Lane, Jonathan and Sara!!! You are amazing!!! --G
