LWC Women's soccer claims regular season crown with 5-2 win

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated Life University (GA) 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Walter S. Reuling Stadium to finish the 2018 regular season campaign with the best record in the Mid-South Conference. The Blue Raiders finish the regular season with an 8-3-2 overall record and a 6-0-1 MSC record.

The Blue Raiders are back in action for the Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Thursday. After taking the conference regular season crown LWC will be the No. 1-seed at the conference tournament, facing off with the No. 8-seeded Pikeville University (KY) at 11amCT.

Lindsey Wilson and the Running Eagles (6-11-0, 2-5-0 MSC) were tied at 2-2 early in the second half but three unanswered goals by LWC gave the Blue Raiders a decisive victory.

Amara Safuan recorded three goals for the Blue Raiders as Sanna Svensson and Sina Cavelti both chipped in with goals of their own. Lindsey Wilson outshot Life 24-10 including 10-6 in shots on goal as the Blue Raiders totaled 11 corner kicks to the Running Eagles one.

Life opened the contest with a quick scoring chance in just the second minute of action when Josie Davis used one touch to get behind LWC defenders inside the 18-yard box. She fired her shot from 10-yard out but the attempt crashed off the inside right post before going out of play.

The action across the first 15 minutes was up-and-down the field as the Blue Raiders managed six shots, but couldn't place their attempts on target. Lindsey would create six corner kicks, producing quality chances on a few of the attempts but couldn't convert.

The Blue Raiders would finally breakthrough in the 26th minute on a costly Life turnover at the top of the box. Svensson gathered the ball and took one touch before firing a shot by Running Eagle goalkeeper to the upper left corner of the goal.

Lindsey Wilson would control the ball in their attacking third for much of the remaining time in the half, but were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances. Lindsey Wilson was fouled just outside the penalty box during the 44th minute giving them a quality scoring chance on the ensuing free kick. Safuan would fire her shot towards the goal but the attempt was blocked away by Sydney Young.

LWC recorded 14 shots in the half, earning themselves nine corner kicks in the process as the Running Eagles would record five shots. Lindsey Wilson put five of their attempts on target as Life put four on goal.

LWC opened the second half with early pressure. Delfina Santellan played a through ball from mid-field that found a streaking Safuan down the left half of the field. Safuan took two touches before firing a shot from 20-yards out that beat Life's goalkeeper to the upper left corner of the goal during the 52nd minute.

The Running Eagles would cut the LWC lead in half during the 61st minute when Jasmine Turner played a shot that was able to sneak by a charging LWC goalkeeper from 12-yards out. Annaliese Froese picked up the assist on the play.

Just moments later during the 65th minute Life's Wilma Moberg would score from just inside midfield on a free kick that was misplayed by LWC defenders, leveling the score at 2-2.

Safuan would score her second goal of the day on a free kick during the 76th minute. Her strike from 24-yard out managed to bypass a wall of Running Eagle defenders before diving into the lower right corner of the goal, out of the reach of Life's goalkeeper.

Six minutes later Safuan would score her third goal of the day, this time from 25-yard out on a cross from Cavelti.

Just moments later, Lindsey Wilson's Cavelti would score the Blue Raiders final goal of the contest, giving LWC a commanding 5-2 lead with six minutes left in the match.
