By Jennifer Hardwick

Being a member of the Adair County Band is truly a lesson in dedication and commitment. These students, who range from 6th to 12th grade, work for months in order to unite as a group and reach levels of success that many only dream of.

Beginning in late May, upperclassmen hold practices with incoming first-year marchers in order to help them begin to learn the basics of marching. Then, throughout the month of June, colorguard and percussion hold mini-camps to begin learning foundational skills essential for their individual sections. A Visual Camp is also held for the entire band at the end of June, which gives them the opportunity to work as a whole group for the first time as they learn various aspects of precision marching and body control.

When July arrives, the band is truly in full swing and summer break is officially over. Two weeks of Band Camp, which include morning marching rehearsals, indoor music rehearsal for the wind instruments and frontline percussion, and outdoor rehearsals specifically for the percussion and colorguard, fill their days. Upon the conclusion of Band Camp, those rehearsals do not stop. Daily practice prior to school beginning is essential in order for the band to learn the show music and drill.

When August arrives and school is back in session, daily practice continues. These students work exceptionally hard to maintain a balance between school, band practice, family, friends, church, part-time jobs, and a social life. The dedication and commitment it takes to be a part of an organization like the Adair County Band is to be admired. These are young people making mature choices with how they spend their time and what benefits they will take from it. The dedication and commitment that they gain from this experience will stay with them throughout their lives.

If you see a band student this week, encourage them. Thank them for their time and efforts to bring pride to this community and school district. They are an exceptional group of students who love Adair County with all their heart! They represent you well, not only in their success on the field, but also in the personal character they display across the state at every competition.

Remember, if you would like to watch Adair attempt history once again as they go for their 23rd State Championship, a very limited number of tickets remain in the reserved ticket section. Contact Susan Pollard at 270-250-3356 for ticket information. The KMEA State Championship Finals Competition will be this Saturday, October 27th, beginning at 5pmCT at Kroger Field in Lexington, KY. We would love to fill the stands with BLUE cheering on your Adair County Band!

Eyes with Pride!
