BOWLING GREEN, KY (Sat 13 Jan 2017 at 6amCT) - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 crews worked through the night battling icy and snowy conditions.

Some areas in the district saw several inches of snow fall overnight, along with ice buildup on the roadways. As of 6amCT, road conditions across the district remain hazardous.

Main routes are still mainly covered, but do have some clear spots on them. Interstate 65, Natcher Parkway and the Louie B. Nunn Parkway still have ice buildup in lanes, but are improving.

The ice buildup on the roadways provide a very challenging situation for road crews. Unlike snow, ice buildup cannot simply be plowed away.

The salt and calcium treatment has to the break the bond to the pavement the ice has formed. Once the bond is broken, then crews can plow the snow and ice off the roadway.

Colder temperatures have slowed this process down.
