Birds of Kentucky: Double Bald Robin, another view

Wayne writes, "This strange-colored bird has been in our neighborhood just north of Campbellsville, KY, for several weeks. When I got close enough to make a picture, I decided it was a Robin whose color pattern came out wrong somehow. I also found a similar photo in the Flicker account of Capt. Robert L. Brodie. The odd color scheme hasn't affected its ability to collect food."

It looks like this robin has 2 separate distinctions -- the color pattern is referred to as "pied" or "piebald," and on top of that, he's actually balding. In some birds, this loss of feathers on the head can be part of the normal molting process, but it can also be a sign of a mite infestation or a nutrition issue.
