Charles H. Shirley, 88, Edmonton, KY (1928-2016)

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War. He moved back to Edmonton in 1959 and started his barber career which spanned more than 50 years. He retired at the age of 84. He was a faithful member of the South Edmonton Church of Christ, where he served as a teacher, song leader and deacon for many years. He was the son of the late John Will and Lucille Knight Shirley. His wife, Bonnie Atkins Shirley, survives. He leaves ten direct living descendants.

Charles H. Shirley, age 88 of Edmonton, KY, passed away peacefully at his home in Edmonton, KY, surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Funeral services will be held 2pmCT, Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at Butler Funeral Home, 201 South Street, Edmonton, KY, with burial in the Metcalfe County Memorial Gardens, Edmonton, KY. Visitation was held 4pmCT until 8pmCT, Tuesday and will be held after 9amCT, Wednesday at the funeral home.



Charles H. Shirley, Edmonton, KY (1928-2016)

He was born February 28, 2016. He was the son of the late John Will and Lucille Knight Shirley. He died in Edmonton, KY, Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the age of 88 years, six months, and 27 days.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bonnie Atkins Shirley, and the following:
  • Three daughters: Lorrie Gilpin and Charlene Keys of Edmonton, KY; and Rita (John) Brown of Glasgow, KY

  • Six grandchildren: Erik, Jessi and Laura Brown, Lindsey and Andrew Gilpin, and Ashley (John Fred) Young

  • One great-granddaughter: McCartney Scout Young

  • One sister: Ida Scott of Fairplay, KY

  • And numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Will and Lucille Knight Shirley; five brothers, Clifton, John Will, Edwin, Curt and Rollin Shirley; And four sisters, Alberta Knight, Elizabeth Shirley, Dora Partyka, and Irene Bell.
