Official proclamation: Mark Twain Week starts Monday
The week of June 14-20, 2026 is proclaimed "Jane Lampton Clemens and Mark Twain Week" in Columbia, Kentucky by Mayor Pamela Hoots. This is in recognition of the collaboration between Lindsey Wilson University and the Arts Administration Program at Lindsey Wilson University; with input from the Adair County History and Genealogy Research Center and the Adair County Arts Council. The proclamation follows:
Jane Lampton Clemens Week - Columbia, Kentucky
June 14-20, 2026
Whereas, the City of Columbia wishes to recognize the historical significance of 'Mark Twain' to Columbia and Adair County;
Whereas, Samuel Langhorne Clemens' - Mark Twain's - mother, Jane Lampton Clemens, is a native of Columbia;
Whereas, we wish to acknowledge the historical significance of his works to our town, state and nation;
Whereas, the City of Columbia & the Arts Administration Program of Lindsey Wilson University have collaborated, with input to this project from the Adair County History & Genealogy Research Center;
Whereas, there will be a reception on Friday, June 19, 2026 and a program on June 20 at Lindsey Wilson University;
Therefore, we proclaim the Week of June 14-20, 2026, as Jane Lampton Clemens & Mark Twain Week in Columbia, Kentucky.

Local artist Tezon Mitchell's mural of Mark Twain, featured prominently on the side of the Sweat Pea's Building, was officially unveiled on Monday, June 15, 2026, as part of Mark Twain Week in Columbia.
The mural features a famous quote by Twain, "My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it." Comments | Permalink
