CPD: Inmate charged with possesion of contraband By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO Columbia Police Department On Thursday morning, March 28, 2024, the Columbia Police Department responded to Adair Regional Jail for a report of located contraband. A female inmate was found to have several prescription pills she was attempting to conceal which jail staff located during a booking search. The female had previously been arrested for drug charges before being transported to Adair Regional Jail. Adair School Board March meeting report By Linda Waggener We get a 'tardy' score on this report, but still want to share the good news of the March Adair County school board meeting. The meeting date was changed so everyone could attend the ACHS boys basketball team's first game in the state tournament. With momentum around that, things moved quickly through the agenda items. Some of the most exciting news is the new middle school, underway now beside the high school, which Superintendent Jason Faulkner said, "is beginning to come up out of the ground - an exciting site to visit." LWC Health and Wellness Center - a gathering place By Macy Welsh The community of Columbia thrives off of locality and unity. Whether it be fellowship with one another or running into a friend in town you have not seen for a while. Columbia is home to Lindsey Wilson College, a private institution for students to further their education at the college level. Being away from home, family and community are important to have, and LWC provides just that. The Holloway Health and Wellness Center is a place for not only students, but community members to come and congregate with one another. In an interview with Tori Starks, the Director of the Holloway Health and Wellness Center, she stated that it is a "Great gathering place, not only for students, but the community." Adair KUNA Team wins big again in 2024! From Candice Flatt Gifted Coordinator for Adair County Schools Adair County's Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) team won big at the state's convention this week in Louisville. They debated world issues with other schools from Kentucky. Bailey Watts received the International Court of Justice President. This is one of the top honors of the competition. She will be replacing Brody Blair, who won last year. We are are so honored to have students win this position back to back. Trey Stephens received the Outstanding Ambassador award. This is a big honor, as well. Our delegation as a whole won the Premier Delegation award. The conference overall was a huge success. Adair Ambassadors were: Bailey Watts, Brody Blair, Aaron Smith, Joe Kotter, Alex Perkins, Trey Stephens, Lilly Myers, Virginia Willis, Sammie Jo Sandusky, Kinzlee Akin, Macy Mann, Seth Murphy, Bailey Watts, and Andrew Zinati. CPD: South charged with assault of jail employees By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO Columbia Police Department The Columbia Police responed to Adair Regional Jail on Wednesday morning, March 27, 2024, just after 6amCT, for an altercation between an inmate and Deputy Jailers. Inmate Joseph South, 57, became aggressive with jail staff and refused to follow verbal commands before physically attacking multiple Deputy Jailers. South has been charged with three counts of assault 3rd degree correctional employee. He was being held at Adair Regional in relation to a fatal shooting which previously occurred March 23, within the county. Officer Trevor Foster was the responding Officer. ACES Academic Team competes in Region 9 Governor's Cup Adair County Elementary School Academic Team participants competed Monday, March 18, and Saturday, March 23, 2024, in Region 9 Governor's Cup at Metcalfe County Elementary School in Edmonton, Kentucky. The region was composed of four districts with a culmination of thirteen schools. Adair County Elementary School (ACES) finished with multiple honors in regional play, claiming the title of runner-up overall Region 9. Other accomplishments included placing third place out of six teams in Future Problem Solving (FPS), coached by Mrs. Jeana Pike. ACES Quick Recall Team, coached by Mrs. Lisa Newell-Hare went undefeated, claiming first place out of eight teams. The accomplished team had seven individual winners in the written composition and written assessment competitions. "With the participants practicing since October, it has been exciting to see their hard work end in great success," says Newell-Hare. "Our students have to be disciplined to put in countless hours practicing and studying for these competitions. Their parents and guardians deserve praise for their dedication in making sure studying takes place at home outside of practice sessions too." Dr. Charles W. Smith to speak at Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday Lindsey Wilson College will welcome retired Western Kentucky University faculty and science librarian Dr. Charles W. Smith to campus on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 for a public talk. Smith is one of the leading scholars on scientist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), the co-originator of the theory of natural selection. Wallace developed his theory independently of Charles Darwin, the scientist most commonly known as the architect of the theory of evolution by natural selection.
