LWC Women's soccer defeats CU in MSC season opener 1-0 By Christopher Coombs Campbellsville, KY - The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team play Campbellsville (Ky.) to a 1-0 victory on Wednesday night in their first Mid-South Conference game of the season after Alicia Thoresen scored the game's lone goal in the second half. The Blue Raiders (3-2-1, 1-0-0 MSC) and Campbellsville (5-4-0, 0-1 MSC) both recorded 11 shots in the match as the Tigers were more efficient, putting six of their attempts on target to the Blue Raiders four. Lindsey Wilson opened the second half pushing their attack. The Blue Raiders outshot the Tigers 4-1 over the first ten minutes of action but couldn't convert on their scoring chances. LWC broke through and took a 1-0 lead in the second half on a goal by Thoresen during the 59th minute. Cumberland Goalkeeper attempted to come out from her goal to clear a ball that found its way behind Campbellsville defenders. Missing on the attempt, the ball dribbled to a wide open Thoresen who fired a shot from 35-yards out into an unattended, wide-open goal, giving LWC a one goal advantage. Campbellsville created two more opportunities to level the score, both from Hope Sanders. Her first attempt was from 20-yards out that went into the open arms of a waiting LWC goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic during the 73rd minute. Sanders final opportunity came during the 89th minute of play when she stood alone 10-yards out after receiving a cross. Unable to handle the ball on her first touch, the Blue Raiders recovered and cleared the ball to safety. Campbellsville pushed the pace in the early goings of the first half as they were able to record the first quality scoring chance. Claudia Eckstein played a ball to Lakin Walls who charged towards the LWC goal but was pinched off by Blue Raider defenders outside the 18-yard box. Walls powered a shot towards the upper-right corner but LWC goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic grabbed it to deny the scoring chance. Lindsey Wilson then put together two quality chances, the first coming during the 24th minute when Yvonne Ploeng played a deep ball over the time to Sina Cavelti down the right half of the field. Cavelti cut inside two Tiger defenders just inside the 18-yard box before laying it off to an open Ploeg, who fired her shot high. During the 28th minute, Ploeng again played a long ball, this time finding a streaking Veronica Kurtz. Behind CU defenders and inside the 18-yard box a charging Tiger goaltender was able to block away the shot, keeping the score at 0-0. Lindsey Wilson would record two more shots in the half but failed to place them on target. Campbellsville's Walls added three more shots for the Tigers in the half as Ivanovic stopped two of them and the other sailed high. Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Williamsburg, Ky., to take on Cumberlands (Ky.) at 4pmCT in MSC action. This story was posted on 2018-09-26 20:54:04
