Farm Safety Day at the Adair County Primary Center

By Laura Marcum

Every year in the U.S., Kentucky, and even in Adair County there are youth that are injured or even killed in home or farming accidents. Every year farming ranks first or second in the most dangerous jobs. Now, more and more, young people are having to help out on the farm and at home and this will increase the chances of a young person getting injured.

A Progressive Farmer Safety Day was planned for all 1st grade students at ACPC. On September 18, 2018, The Adair County Extension Service and the Adair County School System in conjunction with Progressive Agriculture Foundation hosted this event. It took place at the Adair FFA Barn on the High School Campus.

Through hands-on activities, participants learned how to prevent farm and home accidents and how to reduce the extent of injuries if accidents do occur. Topics of the day included safety on or around tractors, livestock, and ATVs. Scheduled speakers and interactive demonstrations reinforced the importance of children taking responsibility for their own safety, respecting parents safety rules and sharing safety tips with their family and friends.

Special thanks to the Adair Co. Extension Agency and the ACPC Family Resource Center for helping host this event for us.
