LWC women's soccer falls to No. 3 William Carey

By Christopher Coombs

The No. 17-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team fell to No. 3 William Carey (Miss.) on Saturday afternoon at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

William Carey (7-1-0) broke the scoreless draw with just 33 seconds left in the first half. Chrestine Nielson got behind LWC (2-2-1) defenders and registered a shot from six-yards out that Ivanovic deflected away. The rebound found its way to a waiting Holifield who touched it into a wide-open goal.

William Carey's Ana Paula Santos created the first scoring chance of the game for the Crusaders during the 20th minute. After challenging a Blue Raider defender down the end line, Santos played a ball into the penalty box to Silvia Leonessi who fired a shot towards the upper right corner of the goal. LWC goalkeeper Jovana Ivanovic was there to shut down the scoring chance.

During the 30th minute, Lindsey Wilson's Yvone Ploeg challenged two Crusader defenders down the left side of the 18-yard box. After getting past both defenders, Ploeg sent a ball to Sina Calvelti who was just eight-yards out but couldn't get her shot past William Carey goalkeeper Abby Baravik.

Two minutes later, a giveaway by Blue Raider defenders gave the Crusaders Jamie Holifield a one-on-one with Ivanovic. Holifield blasted a shot from 15-yards out, but a sprawling Ivanovic was able to get her finger tips on the ball to deflect the quality scoring chance away.

In the 39th minute, Hannah Schrage played a ball to a streaking Calvelti who directed her shot from eight-yards out to the lower right corner of the goal but Crusader goalkeeper was there to make the save.

William Carey outshot Lindsey Wilson 12-6 and 6-3 in shots on goal for the half.

During the 57th minute the Blue Raiders Veronica Kurtz found space between two Crusader defenders just outside the 18-yard box but couldn't get all of the ball, resulting in an easy save for Baravik.

The Crusaders Santos forced a Blue Raider turnover and broke to the top of the penalty box all alone during the 68th minute but Ivanovic shut her down for her sixth save of the match.

Twelve minutes later Ivanovic was able to keep Lindsey Wilson's hopes alive with a big save. Nielson crossed a ball from the left half of the field to Shantell Thompson who deflected a shot on goal and into the arms of Ivanovic from just five-yards out.

Again Ivanovic stood tall in goal, this time stopping two shots in the 82nd minute. The first shot came off the foot of Thompson from inside the penalty box. The rebound deflected out to an open Santos who powered a shot towards the right corner of the goal, but Ivanovic stood tall and was again able to make the save.

The Blue Raiders were forced offside six times in the match as they were outshot 27-11 including 11-6 in shots on goal.

Lindsey Wilson hosts Campbellsville (Ky.) on Wednesday at 5pmCT in their first Mid-South Conference matchup of the 2018 campaign at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Holloway Drive, Columbia, KY.
