Joyce Coomer: Effective use of rumble strips Writer says they worked - and she didn't go airborne1 Related: Charles Marshburn: Law enforcement is only answer Click on headline for complete commentary by Joyce Coomer By Joyce Coomer Thought of these yesterday afternoon but I can't remember where I drove across this set of rumble strips . . . the first set was probably a half mile from an intersection similar to the one we have on Burkesville Road and the Byass. The strips were fairly far apart, maybe 3' so I didn't notice much noise. The second set, maybe 500' or so closer to the intersection were closer together so there was more noise. There was another set of rumble strips about 500' or so from the intersection and these strips were close enough together that the noise from them should have gotten anyone's attention. And I don't think anyone would get airborne at any speed by driving over rumble strips -- they're simply not high enough to create the "lift" needed to become airborne. - Joyce M.
