Sea shells by the dining hall caught Tillie's eye ' . . . it's been one thing to walk by and think how nice the Roberta Cranmer collection is at a passing glance. It was quite another, I'd call it pure joy, experiencing the shells up close through the eyes of this young discoverer. The collection contains some shells she knew already, as in the "I like sea horses" ones, and many shells we'd never seen, like the little purple ones whose names I hope Granddad got in a photo so we can read and share it . . . - Linda Waggener Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Linda Waggener A collection of shells in the lobby of the dining hall at Lindsey Wilson College caught the eye of our seven-year-old granddaughter Matilda Ann. Having just entered second grade, Tillie is reading and sounded out the words labeling the names of each of the shells in her height range. Over the years since it was placed there, it's been one thing to pass by and think how nice the collection is at a passing glance. It was quite another, I'd call it pure joy, experiencing the shells up close through the eyes of this young discoverer. The collection contains some shells she knew already, as in the "I like sea horses" ones, and many shells we'd never seen, like the little purple ones whose names I hope Granddad got in a photo so we can read it. br> Included with the rare shells the following tribute to Roberta D. Cranmer who was an LWC trustee at the time this gift was made. The framed text among the shells reads: "This display is a sampling of the extensive shell collection of Robert D. Cranmer of Louisville, Kentucky. "She started collecting shells during her and her late husband's travels around the world. In 1990 she became the first person to earn Shell Show's most prestigious honor, the Masters Award, presented by the shell museum and educational foundation Inc., Sanibel Island, Florida. The award was presented at the Sanibel Shell Fair. "Her greatest honor in shell collecting came in 1986 when a newly discovered shell was named for her. "Somalipecten cranmerorum are relict of scallops belonging to a group of extinct genus. The first of these shells was found off the coast of Somalia in eastern Africa by Taiwanese fisherman. Dr. Thomas R. Waller of the Department of Paleobiology at the Smithsonian Institution named the new shell 'in honor of Roberta Cranmer and her late husband Charles whose personal involvement and quiet philanthropy have greatly benefited many people and organizations.' "In 1993, Mrs. Cranmer donated her major collection of rare shell specimens to the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Now her collection has been integrated into America's largest museum shell collection to be enjoyed by the museum's thousands of visitors and used for research by students from around the world. "A native of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Cranmer has long been active in the Louisville community and is a tireless supporter of LWC. She received the college's distinguished service award in 1987 and was awarded an honorary doctor of Letters degree in 1992. The Roberta D. Cranmer Dining Hall is an ongoing tribute to her dedication to Lindsey Wilson College." - LWC text This story was posted on 2018-08-22 07:50:38
