Joyce M. Coomer: Father kept detailed notes on fogs

Amazing how accurate this forecasting could be - most of the time it was as accurate, or more so, than the weather forecasts heard on the radio or read in the newspapers.

By Joyce M. Coomer

Daddy kept daily records of the weather. He'd note the temperature at 6 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and rain and other weather events on the calendar each day. August fogs were of special interest.

Daddy recorded quite a bit of information about fog -- density, time of onset, time the sun burned off the fog, etc. He matched the fogs in August to the three winter months with the first third of August relating to December, the second third relating to January and the last third relating to February. The density, etc., of the fogs were indicators about the amount of snow that would fall and how long it would stay on the ground.

It always amazed me how accurate this forecasting could be. Most of the time it was as accurate, if not more so, than the weather forecasts we heard on the radio or read in the newspapers.

I kept a few of the calendars with Daddy's weather recordings and wish I'd kept them all.
