Campbellsville Independent Schools' students will begin the 2018-2019 school year in a few weeks, and will see a new face in the hallways.

CIS has contracted with Campbellsville Police to employ a School Resource Officer, who will be stationed at the Campbellsville High School campus. Officer Charlie Houk has been assigned to the SRO post.

While Houk's office will be at the CHS campus, he will provide safety and security at Campbellsville elementary, middle and high schools.

Houk, who lives in Greensburg, has been an officer with Campbellsville Police since 2010.

He also pastors a church in Greensburg.

Houk said he enjoys working with children, and hopes to build positive relationships with CIS students.

When considering accepting the SRO post, Houk said, he thought about the position being a great opportunity to help children.

"Some children never see police in a positive light," he said.

Houk said he is talking to SROs at local school districts to learn about their duties.

"My main function will be safety and security of the school," he said.

And while Houk said he will always be there to help CIS students, he hopes there will never be an instance in which a police officer is needed.

"I hope I'm the most useless position at the school."

Houk said he will attend upcoming open house and registration events, and he will be available to meet with parents and students.

He will also attend after-school events, such as athletic games, as he is needed.

Houk has been reviewing the District's safety procedures to make sure they are up-to-date and as detailed as possible.

He said he is also spending time learning about the District and its facilities.

CIS Superintendent Kirby Smith said is excited to have Houk at his schools, and is thankful to Campbellsville Police, City of Campbellsville and City Council members for working with the District to employ a SRO.

"We are excited to have Houk as part of the Eagle Family, and hope our students will see him as someone they can talk to.

"Houk will help us ensure that our students are safe. That is our top priority, and having Houk with us is a large step in that direction."
