Nanwood Market opens in historic store on the square

By Linda Waggener

There was joy in downtown Columbia, KY today as the ribbon was cut in front of a packed house celebrating the official opening of Nanwood Market at 206 Public Square. Co-owners Sandy Conover and her daughter Luci Irvin were surrounded by family members and folks who share a love of restored historic buildings and unique shops in town.

Jane Smith recently put it into words perfectly, "...Sitting here this morning thinking how great it is to see our square slowly coming back to life. It makes me smile to drive around it and see lights glowing in the windows at sunset or "We're open" signs instead of blank windows staring back at you. So glad there are people that have a vision and are willing to take the chance at small town business. Love seeing the storefronts re-done - Glamroom, 313 Maple, Cake Divas, Nanwood Market, just to name a few ... So happy!"

The owners, and all who have helped them, have worked non-stop for weeks moving the one-year-old business from across town to this location, taking it back to its original front and interior as much as possible.

The Columbia Adair County Chamber of Commerce is leading an effort to help the young businesses cross-promote and grow together. More information will be coming on Nanwood and all the new downtown stores as it comes in.

Even the windows at the back of the newly restored Nanwood Market on the Columbia Public Square provided entertainment for guests at the Friday, June 6, 2018 ribbon cutting ceremony. Light was pouring into what will be the work room for the owners. The view looks across the city parking lot toward the historic Field house at left, Kenneth and Sandy Janes' home on Fortune Street, Doug and Monica Janes' home on the corner of Reed and Fortune Streets, Duo-County Telephone's maintenance building in the center, a bit of Sav-A-Lot Grocery behind the big Crepe Myrtle bushes, the former Ford Garage/Madison Square Building now owned by Connie and Junior Stotts of Stotts Construction and the back of the EDA-Tourism-Chamber of Commerce building on the right.

Linda Bailey works next door to Nanwood Market and said at the ribbon cutting celebration that wearing the logo of her neighbor is her way of supporting the business. With the Nanwood restoration, three historic buildings in a row on the square are looking great. Linda works with Harris and Harris law firm and her husband Danny is part of Red Brick Studios. Both of those buildings were refurbished by Mike and Laura Harris. - LW

It took a village to restore historic building

2018-07-09 - 206 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
Hours and days and weeks of work went into the restoration of Nanwood Market on the Public Square in Columbia. This view is of last minute work going on before the ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, 6 Jun 2018. Work had to be done around the many well wishers stopping in with questions and support, excited to see this hopeful operation. The feeling that results from seeing this type commitment was put into words beautifully by Jane Smith who is on the Columbia Public Square daily in her work at the Bank of Columbia, "...It makes me smile to drive around it and see lights glowing in the windows at sunset or "We're open" signs instead of blank windows staring back at you. So glad there are people that have a vision and are willing to take the chance at small town business..." - LW
