By Dana Harmon, 21st Century Learning Center/Camp Rocket Director

On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at Adair County Primary Center, 158 Col. Casey Drive, Columbia, KY, Camp Rocket participants were in for an exciting lesson in creatures of all kinds.

Brad Reynolds, of Real Science brought an excellent variety of insects, arachnids, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles and mammals to share with the students. We saw hissing cockroaches, a tarantula, a hermit crab, toads, a bullfrog, a salamander, a gecko, a bearded dragon, a baby soft shell turtle, a box turtle, a preserved head of an alligator, snakes and the cutest hedgehog!!

While all the creatures Mr. Reynolds brought to share were interesting, some elicited more excitement among the students and staff. A six foot long boa constrictor that wrapped around his torso, a tarantula that when projected onto a screen became a monster and a gecko that used his sticky fingers to cling to the balding head of Mr. Reynolds caused quite a stir.

Mr. Reynolds explained the finer details of each specimen and students were able to see exactly what he spoke of with the help of a camera and projector that made them bigger than life! The presentation was more than a viewing of the creatures, Mr. Reynolds, a former biology professor knows a great deal about them. It is clearly a passion for him and one that he loves to share with kids.

Camp Rocket is sponsored by Family Resource Center and 21st Century Community Learning Center-Camp Casey at Adair County Primary Center. Generous contributions of volunteer time and resources from a host of community partners, help make this summer learning program possible.

--Dana Harmon, 21st Camp Casey LC Director
