The annual awards are coordinated by Serve Kentucky - formerly known as the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service. Serve Kentucky is part of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS). The Bonner Scholars were one of only four groups honored by Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton and Executive Cabinet Secretary Scott Brinkman during the ceremony. Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton said that the honorees deserve appreciation. "These winners are truly the definition of servant leadership," said Hampton. "Every day, they rise to the challenge of improving our Commonwealth. Kentucky is much better richer for the service of these volunteers." Natalie Vickous, LWC Director of Civic Engagement and Student Leadership, said that the award is a testament to the dedication of the scholars. "Our Bonner Program is successful because of the students who participate in it," said Vickous. "They are wholly committed to changing the world through creative problem-solving, civic engagement, advocacy, and action. They impact our entire community and state. We really appreciated receiving the Governor's Group Service Award as a necessary reminder to our students that what they're doing does make a positive impact on their world."
