Busy month for business growth in Columbia/Adair Co. - EDA

From Tueday morning regular meeting of Columbia-Adair Co. Economic Development meeting:
  • New prospect now negotiating with Columbia/Adair County who could bring starting 150 jobs, with potential for 300.
  • Large scale greenhouse operation looking at Adair; County Agent Nick Roy brought lead, which is being aggressively followed up on by EDA leadership, now evaluating possible locations of at least 50 acres, 32 acres of which would be under glass. Company produces organic veggies.
  • Site development by Pyles Excavating for prestigious Wayne Supply outlet already underway at Holladay Place
  • EDA is looking for grant to hire another PT or FT EDA employee
  • Huge potential for plant sites developing at intersection of KY 61 South and Veterans Bypass.
  • EDA Chairman Mark Dykes, who presided at the meeting, said that overall, Columbia and Adair County are being looked at seriously by potential employers, there is movement, and he feels the economy is looking up

COLUMBIA, KY - (Tue 15 May 2018) - Columbia/Adair County Economic Development Authority Chairman Mark Dykes said that it had been a busy month since the last meeting with several key meetings, conference calls and conversations concerning project development now and for future economic health of Columbia and Adair County.

One project under discussion, with the largest potential - no names - but it is in the manufacturing area - could employ 150 people to start with, growth potential up to 300 jobs.



The developers who brought the idea to the Columbia Adair County EDA leadership are from an adjoining county and they are working on their business plan and securing investors as they explore potential locations.

EDA evaluating land for possible greenhouse operation

It was reported that Nick Roy has been contacted by a large scale greenhouse operation which has present locations in the state of Kentucky. The company is in need of 50 acres of flat land to have 32 of those acres put under glass.

This grower produces organic vegetables. Topological land maps have been provided, from industrial parks to private sites, that could be available to them.

Site development underway for Wayne Supply outlet in Columbia

Site development is underway and one management person has already been hired locally in the new Wayne Supply company locating behind Walmart in New Columbia. The Franklin Motors company is putting up the building. Wayne Supply headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky will be managing the Columbia site. It sounded like 6 to 10 jobs may be possible with this addition to local economy.

The Wayne Supply company project has been in the works for two years, pointing to the months and years it takes for large projects with potential jobs to be located in a community. EDA Board members continue to work with a consultant who advises that the county needs to become an A-plus site listing. The work to be done includes updating both the environmental and the archaeological studies and movement was discussed toward that goal.

County looking for grant to hire a new PT or FT EDA employee and getting pricing for industrial acreage

Discussion centered around applying for a grant to hire either a part-time or full-time economic development authority employee as Casey County has done in the past three years. Casey's contract is ending soon and Adair County EDA members are in discussion with Judy Keltner at the Lake Cumberland Area development district to help with the grant application and specifics.

Land prices are being explored for possible sale to existing employer ATS, as well as being ready to quote to potential buyers in future. The EDA is looking at comparable prices of industrial acreage in surrounding counties. Metcalfe County has the lowest priced industrial land at $10,000 per acre. Taylor county has the highest industrial land, priced at $35,000 per acre. A certified appraiser will be found before prices are officially given out.

In possible site locations, Adair County Judge Executive Michael Stephens said Majestic Yacht company will be sold, the equipment will be sold first at auction to come within the next 30 days. And mention was made that the owner of Image Analysis plans to sell the old factory site across Burkesville Road from Majestic. That would provide large buildings and acreage on both Sides of the Burkesville Road/Veterans Bypass corner in Columbia.

Chairman Dykes said that overall, Columbia and Adair County are being looked at seriously by potential employers, there is movement, and he feels the economy is looking up.

EDA Board position is still open

In other matters, there is still a position open for a board member of the EDA, to be taken up at the next meeting June 19, 2018, 8amCT, at the Chamber of Commerce building on Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY. The vacant seat comes from former secretary Randy Burnes having relocated to another county, and is open for recommendations for replacement from Fiscal Court and/or the Columbia City Council.

Present, at today's meeting, 15 May 2018, were chairman Mark Dykes, Treasurer Ann Martin, and new Secretary Kinzey Rowe, Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stevens, Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick, Board member Roger Meadows, Adair Deputy CJE Andrea Waggener and members of the media.

Finances hold steady, with minimal expenses, income

Treasurer Ann Martin reported that April's ending balance was $163,909.91, down only slightly from the beginning balance of $166,599.22. Income was $13.64, from interest. Expenses were $2,642.95, for the Development Authority's share of office expense for the month.

Chairman Dykes reminded those present that the next meeting will be at 8amCT, Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the Chamber of Commerce Building, 201 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY.

Rowe accepts position as new EDA Secretary
