Ben Arnold remembers Brooks Coomer: A life well lived

'His life was purpose-filled, with giving to so many others.' - BEN ARNOLD
About: Remembering: Mr. Brooks Coomer - A Really Good Man

By Ben Arnold

Brooks Coomer is an example of a life well-lived. His life was purpose-filled, with giving to so many others.

He had a profound impact on my life, the life of a poor country boy who rode the bus, and had time before and after school to spend in the gym.

My brother Carl and I shot baskets with our principal, Brooks.

He so enjoyed beating us routinely!

In my sophomore year and maybe because he saw I was getting better, he called me to his office.

Fearful that I had done something, I hurried down. He said, "I want you to go out for basketball. Coach Burr will work with you in the mornings before school."

They even bought me basketball shoes. They both encouraged me and worked with me, tossing the ball over and over. You don't forget commitments and encouragements like that; two really strong men of purpose.

As a sophomore, I was way behind in skills (never did learn to dribble more then 2 or 3 bounces). Without them, I would never have ventured out.

This experience was important because Centre College came recruiting and my academic path began to take shape. Thank you, Mr. Principal Coomer. - Ben Arnold
