From A-Team Staff at Adair County High School

As "March Madness" is buzzing about the sports world, the culmination of Kentucky academic competition reached its peak this past weekend in the annual "Academic Team Big Dance" at the Galt House in Louisville. The location served as host to state's elite who gathered for the Governor's Cup State Championships after qualifying through the District and Region stages in January and February. The Adair County High School Academic Team returned to top form by bringing home the Future Problem Solving State Championship. Among others, the team climbed past the defending 2nd and 3rd Place finisher at last year's World Championships to take home the title. The competition goes through three rounds of evaluations with cuts to the Top 10 that get whittled down to 5 and then re-scored completely among the top 5 competing teams in the final round of evaluation. Adair swept 1st place scores among all evaluators in the final round, a rare accomplishment at such a high level.

As part of the esteem earned with being declared State Champions, the team earned automatic qualification for the International Championships to be held in June. There, Adair will return to compete against representatives from over 40 U.S. states, as well as teams representing national/state/regional champions from Hong Kong, Australia, Great Britain, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Portugal, and others. Adair has a sturdy reputation among the world academic competition community, boasting International Championships in Scenario Writing in the past, as well as ten Top 10 finishes among the world's best at this competition. Team members of the State Championship squad were Benjamin Hancock, Lejano Zavalija, Arabella Caldwell, and Chris Stuchell.

The FPS State Championship was not the only accolade from this past weekend. In addition, Benjamin Hancock ranked 9th among all Science competitors across the state in the Science Written Assessment. This is a rare achievement among the state's elite individual qualifiers. This was Hancock's third state year of state qualification, ending his Governor's Cup run with a spot among the best in the state.

The Future Problem Solving Alternates competition at State Finals is the opportunity for FPS members not competing in the team competition to compete with one another in a separate format. Trevor Smith took home the State Championship in that competition over the weekend. Adair was also represented by a 3rd Place finish by CJ Bonifer.

In Quick Recall action, the team won their opening round match against 5th Region Champion Bethlehem in a convincing manner. The team was eventually upended with a valiant effort against Simon Kenton, who went on to place 5th in Quick Recall.

In each individual category and all team events during Governor's Cup, teams earn points for how high they finish. Overall, Adair County finished in the Top 10 overall team points among all schools competing in the event.

Students competing in and attending State Finals this weekend included Benjamin Hancock, Lejano Zavalija, CJ Bonifer, Trevor Smith, Arabella Caldwell, Samuel Willis, Chris Stuchell, Maddie Harmon, Ty Cheatham, Keaton Coomer, Alex Godsey, and Elizabeth Rexroat.
