Campbellsville Elementary School fifth-grader Mackenzie Negron was named a winner in this year's Grandparent of the Year essay contest, sponsored by AARP Kentucky and Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.

The contest is open to thousands of public school fifth-graders.

In Taylor County, a winner is chosen from both Campbellsville and Taylor County middle schools.

Negron was recently recognized at a Taylor County Retired Teachers Association meeting.

She read her essay, which is about her grandfather Woodford "Junior" Bottoms, and was presented with a $25 check.

She was also recognized at the Campbellsville Board of Education meeting on Monday, March 19, 2018.

The annual contest is to recognize the significant contributions that older Kentuckians make toward shaping the lives and values of youth across the Commonwealth.
