EDA Meeting Report II - Retail Academy follow up Chairman Mark Dykes introduced the brief follow up on the Retail Academy training in Birmingham, Alabama recently. Three from Adair County participated in the six-hour marketing research intensive - Dykes, from the EDA; Tiffany Kessler from the City of Columbia and Andrea Waggener from Fiscal Court. Highlights of the experience were shared at Tuesday's EDA meeting, with an open meeting being planned for later in the spring so that all businesses and services can have the opportunity to have equal access to full information about the economic picture in Columbia and Adair County. In addition to the demographics, they learned that the majority of the data was taken not from census tallies, but rather from cell phone information. Dykes said that all cell phones with the weather app track the phone wherever it goes. They learned that the millennial generation is the target for all retail planning. They learned that the New Columbia area, around the super Walmart, is the natural place for retail growth. However, they also learned that the historic downtown cannot be left shabby if Columbia/Adair County will prosper. The experts told them it will take both city and county working together to make growth opportunities happen here. They said demographics show a strong daytime population, ballooning in the daytime as people come into the county. Even factoring in those people who leave our specific trade area during the day, the population grows to over 30,000 in the daytime. They also learned that people who are born here mostly want to stay here. It's up to leadership to develop the area to its full potential in order to keep young people from leaving. The planned public meeting to share all the specifics will be announced in the media as soon as the date is set. This story was posted on 2018-03-21 00:15:51
