LWC Softball opens play at NFCA Tournament on Friday

The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team opens up play at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Tournament, South Commons Softball Complex, 400 4th Street, Columbus, GA. The Blue Raiders (6-1) open the tournament on Friday, March 9, 2018, against Lawrence Tech (MI) at 9amCT and then take on (RV) Clarke (Iowa) at 11:30amCT.

On Saturday, the Blue Raiders face Lindenwood-Belleville (IL) at 9amCT and No. 8 William Carey (MS) at 2:30pmCT.

To close things out on Sunday, LWC is set to face off with No. 19 Mobile (AL) at 8amCT.


Lindsey Wilson went 5-1 at the Gulf Coast Invitational March 2-4. The Blue Raiders won their first three games defeating Culver-Stockton (Mo.) 2-0, Blue Mountain (Miss.) 9-0 and Lyon (Ark.) 7-6. Lindsey Wilson then lost 3-2 to Thomas before closing out the GCI with wins against Avila (Mo.) 6-0 and No. 2-ranked Columbia (Mo.) 3-1.

The Blue Raiders hit three home runs against Avila as Abby Whelan pitched all seven innings allowing just four hits and not walking a batter. Against Columbia, reigning Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the week Taylor Slade pitched all seven innings allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out three.

Lawrence Tech is 4-2 this season and was last in action for a doubleheader against Martin Methodist (Tenn.) on Sunday. The Sun Devils split the doubleheader winning the first game 4-1 and falling 5-4 in the second game. Alina Molette, Alex Amos and Katie Cyster each recorded two hits while driving in a run in game one. Brittany Wieland and Meredith Adams had two hits apiece in game two. Adams and Andra Malburg each drove in a run.

Friday's matchup is the first meeting between the two schools.

Clarke opened their season at the Lindenwood-Belleville tournament March 2-3. Clarke opened the tournament with three losses falling to Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.), Georgetown (Ky.) and Lawrence Tech. The Pride won their tournament finale against Indiana Southeast 10-2 in five innings. Ashley Botsford drove in four runs while Morgan Lenderink recorded three RBIs. Allyson Renforth had two hits driving in a pair of runs.

Friday's matchup is the first meeting between the two schools.

Lindenwood-Belleville is 7-4 this season and last competed at the Lindenwood-Belleville tournament March 2-3. The Lynx went 1-3 defeating Clarke (Iowa) in the opener 4-2. Lindenwood-Belleville then fell to Indiana Southeast 7-4, Georgetown 13-6 and Lawrence Tech 3-0. Payton Curtis leads the team in batting average with a. 435 and is second on the team in RBIs with seven. Madison Mountain has driven in a team-high nine runs and leads the team in home runs with two.

Saturday's matchup is the first meeting between the two schools.

William Carey is 7-2 this season and last competed at the Gulf Coast Invitational March 2-4 where they went 4-1. The Crusaders defeated Spring Hill (Ala.) 4-3, No. 14-ranked Reinhardt (Ga.) 1-0 in eight innings, Keiser (Fla.) 3-0 and No. 2 Columbia (Mo.) 2-1. The Crusaders wrapped up the GCI with an 8-2 loss to 12th-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.). Macy Monk and Hannah Gasaway each recorded a pair of hits with an RBI. William Carey has won seven of its last eight games.

Saturday's matchup is the fifth meeting between the two schools. William Carey holds a 3-1 edge in the series. The two teams last met on February 18, 2017 with the Blue Raiders falling 5-3.

The Rams are 10-4 this season and last competed at the Gulf Coast Invitational March 2-4 where they went 4-1. After dropping its first game, Mobile won its next five games at the GCI. They defeated 19th-ranked Coastal Georgia 3-2, Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 1-0, Culver-Stockton (Mo.) 10-2 and Lyon (Ark.) 10-0. The Rams closed out the invitational with a 6-0 victory against Keiser (Fla.). Maegan Walding led the way for Mobile with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Emily Fleetwood had three hits while driving in a run. Hope Cain pitched all seven innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out four.

Sunday's matchup is the sixth meeting between the two schools. Mobile holds a slight 3-2 edge in the series. Lindsey Wilson won the last meeting back on May 22, 2015 2-1.

Live stats will be available for all Lindsey Wilson games. The Blue Raiders begin the NFCA Tournament on Friday at 9amCT against Lawrence Tech.
