LWC Baseball falls to Indiana Wesleyan and to Brescia

By Charlie Balcom

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Tuesday evening at Egnew Park. The Blue Raiders (7-12) dropped the first game of the day 20-4 to Indiana Wesleyan (10-6) before falling in the nightcap to Brescia (Ky.) (2-13) by an 8-3 margin.

Lindsey Wilson 4, Indiana Wesleyan 20
After topping Brescia (KY) 21-3 in the first game of the tripleheader, Indiana Wesleyan kept the offensive firepower rolling as the Wildcats pounded out 17 hits for 20 runs against the Blue Raiders. LWC trailed by just one at 3-2 after four complete innings, but Indiana Wesleyan poured on 17 runs in the final four innings, including six in the fifth and nine in the eighth to bring an early end to the run-ruled game.

Manny Chavarria went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss including a solo home run. Tyler Maskill and Ben Heideman each had two hits.

Five Wildcats had multiple hits led by Jordan Wharton's 4-for-6 day with six RBIs.

Kalvin Guzman (0-2) suffered the loss surrendering three earned runs on three hits in 1-1/3 innings.

Lindsey Wilson 3, Brescia 8
After a scoreless first, Brescia took a 2-0 lead in the second, scoring both runs with two outs on back-to-back-to-back singles.

Lindsey Wilson sent runners to second base just twice in the game before the sixth inning when some aggressive baserunning from Maskill helped cut the lead in half.

Maskill led off the inning with a single to left and when Brescia took their time getting the ball in from the outfield, Maskill took advantage and scurried over to second base. After a popout, Maskill attempted to steal third when Seth Price put a ball in play to short. The Bearcats took the out at first while Maskill raced home on the throw and scored to cut the lead in half.

But as soon as the Blue Raiders drew closer, Brescia responded with a four spot in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-1 game. The Bearcats strung together four hits in the frame, including a two-out double to account for the final run.

Lindsey Wilson added a run in the bottom half of the inning after Jalen Rogers delivered a one-out single through the hole between third and short to make it a 6-2 game.

But once again Brescia got the run right back in the next half inning. After a hit by pitch, Brescia's Omar Yepez advanced all the way to third from first after a failed pickoff move, Yepez scoring one batter later on a sac fly to make it 7-2.

Again the Blue Raiders got one back in the bottom part of the inning after three-straight hits. Tanner Moore started things with a one-out double, and Price and Steven Calderon followed with back-to-back singles to cut the deficit to 7-3. That would be the final scores for LWC though as Brescia tacked on one run in the top of the ninth and the Blue Raiders were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Dalton Hall (0-2) suffered the loss allowing two runs, both unearned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Maskill and Moore each had two hits in the loss.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action at Egnew Park, inside LW Sports Park, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY, on Friday for the start of a four-game series with Roosevelt (Ill.) beginning at 2pmCT.
