LWC Men's Basketball upsets Cumberlands 53-40

By Charlie Balcom

Pikeville, KY - A strong defensive effort and a points surge early in the second half helped the sixth-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team upset third-seeded Cumberlands (KY) 53-40 in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon, March 2, 2018, at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center, Eastern Kentucky Expo, 126 Main Street, Pikeville, KY. With the victory, Lindsey Wilson advances to face No. 9-ranked and second-seeded Georgetown (KY) in the tournament semifinals on Saturday at 3pmCT.

The Blue Raiders (22-8) limited the 17th-ranked Patriots (21-9) to a 23.3 shooting percentage from the floor and a 20.0 percent mark from beyond the arc, while LWC used an 18-2 run during the second half to pull away for the upset.

Three Blue Raiders finished in double figures led by Bryan Wallace's 12. Nic Brown had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Charles Sutton had 10 points. Can Oztamur provided valuable minutes off the bench to the tune of eight points and six rebounds.

The first half was a massive offensive struggle for both sides as the two teams combined to shoot 16-for-58 from the field. Lindsey Wilson made 10-of-23 attempts (43.5 percent) while Cumberlands shot 6-for-35 (17.1 percent). The difference came beyond the arc where LWC missed all eight of their attempts and the Patriots made 4-of-20. Despite the advantage in overall shooting percentage, LWC suffered from multiple multi-minute scoring droughts that kept the Blue Raiders from creating separation.

Cumberlands opened the game with a 3-pointer only for the Blue Raiders to roll off 12-straight points and take the lead. After starting the contest hitting 6-of-7 shots, Lindsey Wilson soon followed with a four-minute scoring drought before Oztamur ended the scoreless streak with a basket to make it 14-9. The first non-3-pointer for the Patriots came at the 4:13 mark as Oztamur had to end another three-minute LWC scoring drought with a basket to make it 18-15. Wallace scored the final three points of the half for LWC as the Blue Raiders took a 21-17 lead into halftime.

LWC scored 18 of their 21 points in the paint while Cumberlands grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in the half, but they were only able to convert those to five second-chance points.

Both teams started slow out of the locker room in the final 20 minutes, but Lindsey Wilson quickly corrected the shooting woes.

As LWC ahead by just one at 23-22, the Blue Raiders started hitting shots, scoring the next 10 points of the game to take a 33-22 lead. Cumberlands finally ended their drought with a basket at the 11:38 mark. But then LWC went off again, scoring another eight points in a row to go up 41-24 after a Kel Stotts basket. During LWC's 18-2 run, Cumberlands made just one basket and from the 16:42 mark to the 5:53 mark of the half, over a 10-minute span. Lindsey Wilson's stingy zone defense clogged up the passing lanes and created tough shots and turnovers with their quick switches.

The Patriots eventually got the lead down to 10 points with 1:16 to go, but it was too little too late as LWC closed things out for the 53-40 win.

Will Gary led the Patriots with 13 points while Eric Duncan had 11.
